Tracheostomy Care

This course will explain in detail why the insertion and the use of a tracheostomy is required. Typically, a tracheostomy is used to support the individual's airway due to issues with obstruction, injury or disease. Via this port, we also need to meet the individual's needs with clearing secretions using a suction machine and catheters as well as attaching to breathing apparatus such as ventilators.

Delegates will be supported to learn the anatomy of this area and understand the different types of equipment that is used once an individual has a tracheostomy in place. You will also be supported to understand the implications and difficulties that can arise such as, swallowing, verbally communicating, the need for humidification, the risk of infections and how we can support not only the physical needs but the emotional needs of those who have a tracheostomy in place

On this course we will look at the differences of the "clean technique" and "aseptic technique" and when it is appropriate to use them. Delegates will have the opportunity to practise several techniques of cleaning the area, changing the tracheostomy and inner cannulas, suctioning and supporting breathing before being fully assessed by our trainer and RGN. By the end of the training course all delegates will be educated and have the confidence in using their new skill set with those in their care.

Indications for tracheostomy
Possible complications
Types of tracheae
Overcoming communication problems
What actions to take in an emergency
Practical elements including suctions, humidification, cleaning, dressing and changing of the tracheae

I really enjoyed the emergency first aid online course. I have done a few and this one was very detailed. It probably helps it is one of my favourite subjects, but it is not too easy, it's spot on! I look forward to the practical and I'm really happy I beat the record. I expect a gold badge lol.. I learnt some new skills to remember, I never knew about Agonal breathing .... very interesting. I'm glad I'm making an impact before even starting properly. I also took load of notes for uni!
